Hematite belongs to the Oxide group of minerals. It can both be found in places with still waters and mineral hot springs where the mineral precipitates in the water forming multiple layers at the very bottom. It also forms due to volcanic activity in many igneous rocks as a weathering product of siderite and magnetite or in sedimentary rocks as a pigmenting agent. It mainly consist of iron but some inclusions that can be found are titanium, aluminum, manganese and others. Depending on the concentration of these elements there can be different varieties of this mineral such as Iron Rose, Specularite, Martite and others.
Hematite is an iron oxide mineral. It has a 5.5 to 6.5 score on the Mohs scale which means it’s a hard mineral that might be scratched. The fracture type is uneven to subconchoidal when raw pieces crack.
Hematite was named due to the red coloration that is present in some varieties. The name comes from the Greek word “haima” which means blood.
Where is Hematite Found?
Hematite is a common crystal, coming from tons of places including the United States, Canada, Venezuela and the Minas Gerais in Brazil for example.
Hematite is a mineral that forms in the ground through various geological processes. It is commonly found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock formations. One of the primary ways hematite forms is through the alteration of iron-bearing minerals in the presence of oxygen and water. This process, known as oxidation, occurs when iron-rich minerals undergo chemical reactions with atmospheric oxygen. Hematite can also precipitate from hydrothermal fluids, where hot, mineral-rich water seeps through cracks and fissures in rocks and deposits hematite crystals as it cools.
In some cases, hematite can be found as a product of volcanic activity, where molten lava contains iron compounds that crystallize as it cools and solidifies. Hematite's distinctive metallic luster and deep red-brown to silver-gray coloration make it easily recognizable in various geological formations around the world. Its presence in diverse geological settings contributes to its abundance in nature and its widespread use as a valuable iron ore.
Rainbow Hematite
Natural rainbow hematite, also known as specular hematite (although not all is rainbow), is a captivating variety of hematite prized for its iridescent play of colors. This phenomenon occurs when light interacts with the fine parallel platelets or lamellae within the hematite, creating a spectral display of colors reminiscent of a rainbow. The mesmerizing colors shift as you view the crystal from different angles, making it a highly sought-after and unique gemstone.
In recent years, natural rainbow hematite has become increasingly rare to find in its pure, unaltered form. The demand for this beautiful stone, coupled with mining activities, has led to a decline in its availability. Additionally, the formation of natural rainbow hematite is a complex geological process that requires specific conditions, making its occurrence less frequent. As a result, collectors and crystal enthusiasts value this gemstone not only for its stunning aesthetics but also for its rarity and the geological history it represents. Its scarcity has elevated its status among crystal connoisseurs, making it a prized addition to any collection.
Hematite Inclusions
Hematite inclusions possess a remarkable capacity to influence the appearance of other crystals, notably quartz and amethyst. These inclusions play a transformative role in the colors exhibited by these crystals, imparting them with new and captivating shades. In the case of quartz, the presence of hematite can lead to a spectrum of hues, including smoky brown, reddish-brown, or even a mesmerizing metallic silver-gray. This infusion of colors adds depth and complexity to the quartz crystals, creating a visually captivating effect that often makes them highly sought after in the world of crystal enthusiasts.
Similarly, hematite inclusions found within amethyst crystals introduce subtle hints of red, brown, or even black crystals to the predominantly purple gemstone. This interaction results in a harmonious blend of amethyst's royal purple with earthy tones, producing a mesmerizing interplay of colors that enhances the amethyst's overall aesthetic appeal. This phenomenon highlights the intricate and enchanting synergy between different minerals, showcasing nature's ability to create breathtaking natural wonders through their collaboration.
