Onyx stones are members of the Chalcedony family (which is part of the quartz family haha). The most distinctive part of banded Onyx are the lines which are parallel to one another instead of being chaotic like in other agates. These bandings are often the same or shades of the same colors, but they can truly come in a wide range of colors.
Onyx is a silicon dioxide crystal and an oxide mineral. It has a 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale of harness which makes it perfect for carvings. This stone has an uneven and conchoidal surface when the mineral is fractured, but it is most often carved or polished.
Onyx’s name comes from the Greek word for “claw” thanks to the white bands that often look like fingernails. The legend surrounding this label talks about how Cupid cut the nails of his mother, the goddess Venus, which then fell into the Indus river and turned into Onyx.
Onyx is also the Leo birthstone.
What color is onyx?
Onyx typically exhibits a deep black color. This rich and intense hue is the most commonly associated color with this gemstone. The blackness of Onyx is often uniform and captivating, lending an air of sophistication and elegance to any piece it adorns. While black is the predominant color, it's worth noting that Onyx can sometimes display bands or layers of different shades, ranging from black to dark brown or even white. These distinctive patterns add depth and character to the stone, making each piece of Onyx truly unique.
While black is the most well-known and common color of Onyx, it can also occur in various other hues. Blue Onyx is a captivating variety that displays shades of blue, ranging from light sky blue to deep navy. White Onyx, on the other hand, features a pristine and creamy white color, often with subtle veining or patterns. Orange Onyx is another fascinating variation, showcasing warm and vibrant orange tones that can range from light peach to deep burnt orange. These alternative colors of Onyx offer unique aesthetics and allow for a diverse range of design possibilities.
Where is Onyx Found?

Notably, Mexico stands out as one of the largest producers of Onyx. This intriguing gem has also played a significant role in the history of civilizations, including ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and 19th-century Germany and France, where it adorned palaces, temples, and exquisite jewelry.
