What is onyx?

Onyx stones are members of the Chalcedony family. The most distinctive part of banded Onyx are the lines which are parallel to one another instead of being chaotic like in other agates. These bandings are often the same or shades of the same colors, but they can truly come in a wide range of colors. The most famous variant in this group is Black Onyx which has white bands or none at all.

Onyx is a silicon dioxide crystal and an oxide mineral. It has a 6.5- 7 on the Mohs scale of harness which makes it perfect for carvings. This stone has an uneven and conchoidal surface when the mineral is fractured, but it is most often carved or polished.

Onyx’s name comes from the Greek word for “claw” thanks to the white bands that often look like fingernails. The legend surrounding this label talks about how Cupid cut the nails of his mother, the goddess Venus, which then fell into the Indus river and turned into Onyx.

Where is Onyx Found?

Onyx can be found all around the world such as Brazil, Argentina, Canada, China, India, Madagascar, the UK and in some parts of the US. But Mexico is one of the largest producers. It’s also been around for centuries in many different civilizations such as Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire as well as 19th century Germany and France.

Onyx Meaning

Onyx can be used to increase enthusiasm, strength and stamina. People who face a lot of frustration, hesitation and nightmares can also utilize this soothing stone. It will help you master your sense of self, bringing you a lot of confidence! You could also benefit from Black Onyx by grounding your energy because it’s ideal for stabilizing your Root Chakra. Other chakras that can be associated to this stone are White Onyx with the Crown Chakra and Green Onyx with the Heart Chakra.

Onyx can be the ideal companion that you can carry in your pocket. You can also use this stone in the form of Onyx jewelry which is the most efficient way because of its direct contact with the skin. It’s also a very good option to spice up your place according to Feng Shui. You can either place it in your favorite spots for increasing the mental rest effect or near entrances for providing protection. This can also be the perfect gemstone to stabilize the fiery energies of Leos. However you choose to use this crystal, it will surely balance you out and renew your vigor!
