Apophyllite is a crystal member of the Phyllosilicate family. It is usually found in the form of grassy formations along with Stilbite, Heulandite and Chalcedony in igneous rocks such as Basalt and Granite. It also grows in voids in the metamorphic zones that are secluded by intrusive rocks. Apophyllite is mainly mined as a white crystal which is due to the potassium traces. There are also other components that play a role in the coloring such as natrium in combination with fluorine giving the brown and yellow variations or potassium along with fluorine for the green, violet and pink tones.
Apophyllite is a silicate mineral. It has a hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale. Due to its low hardness it also has an uneven fracture when the mineral breaks. Points can easily snap off. Another interesting fact about this stone is that it can conduct electrical charge.
Apophyllite’s name comes from the Greek words “apo” and “phyllon” which are roughly translated as ‘flake off’. This describes the crystal’s tendency to flake when it’s in contact with heat or acids.
Where is Apophyllite found?
Apophyllite is a beautiful and sought-after mineral that can be found in various locations around the world. The mineral is commonly found in igneous and volcanic rocks, as well as in hydrothermal veins and cavities. Apophyllite clusters have been discovered in numerous countries, including India, Canada, Brazil, Germany, and the United States.
India is the primary source of apophyllite, where it is found in the Deccan Traps, a large volcanic province located in the western part of the country. In this region, apophyllite occurs in large, well-formed crystals and can be found in a range of colors, including white, green, pink, and peach. The crystals from India are highly prized for their exceptional clarity and luster.
In addition to India, apophyllite can also be found in Canada, particularly in the province of Nova Scotia. Here, the mineral is often associated with zeolites and can be found in a range of colors, including green, yellow, and white. Other notable locations for apophyllite include Brazil, where it occurs in large, transparent crystals, and Germany, where it is often found in basaltic rocks.
