What is Apophyllite?

what is apophyllite

Apophyllite is a crystal member of the Phyllosilicate family. It is usually found in the form of grassy formations along with Stilbite, Heulandite and Chalcedony in igneous rocks such as Basalt and Granite. It also grows in voids in the metamorphic zones that are secluded by intrusive rocks. Apophyllite is mainly mined as a white crystal which is due to the potassium traces. There are also other components that play a role in the coloring such as natrium in combination with fluorine giving the brown and yellow variations or potassium along with fluorine for the green, violet and pink tones.

Apophyllite is a silicate mineral. It has a hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale. Due to its low hardness it also has an uneven fracture when the mineral breaks. Points can easily snap off.  Another interesting fact about this stone is that it can conduct electrical charge.

Apophyllite’s name comes from the Greek words “apo” and “phyllon” which are roughly translated as ‘flake off’. This describes the crystal’s tendency to flake when it’s in contact with heat or acids.

Apophyllite in Jewelry

While Apophyllite is a stunning mineral, it is classified as a soft gemstone, ranking between 4.5 and 5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Due to its perfect cleavage, it is highly brittle and prone to fracturing, making it difficult to cut into faceted Apophyllites. However, skilled lapidaries occasionally manage to produce small, high-quality facetable material, which is prized among collectors.

Because Apophyllite is delicate, it requires protective settings when used in jewelry. Bezel settings, cabochon cuts, and pendants are preferred over rings, as they reduce the risk of damage. Silver and white gold settings complement Apophyllite’s bright and ethereal aesthetic, enhancing its natural clarity and refractive properties.

When choosing Apophyllite jewelry, consider the following:

  • Opt for necklaces, earrings, and pendants instead of rings to minimize wear.
  • Store separately from harder gemstones like quartz and diamonds to prevent scratches.
  • Clean gently with warm water and a soft cloth; avoid ultrasonic cleaners or prolonged water exposure.

Though not ideal for everyday wear, faceted Apophyllites and raw crystal pendants remain stunning additions to any collection, offering both beauty and powerful metaphysical benefits.

The Science & Formation of Apophyllite

Apophyllite is a secondary mineral that forms in metamorphic rocks and volcanic basalt. It belongs to the Apophyllite Group, a set of hydrated potassium calcium silicate minerals that includes fluorapophyllite-(K), hydroxyapophyllite-(K), and fluorapophyllite-(Na). These minerals crystallize in the tetragonal system, often appearing as pyramidal structures or cubic formations.

The presence of fluorine and potassium gives Apophyllite its varying colors, ranging from white and Green Floral Apophyllite to pink, yellow, and even gray. The stone's refractive indices vary slightly depending on its composition, typically falling between 1.530 and 1.540. One of Apophyllite’s most unique properties is its ability to conduct electricity, thanks to its water content, which allows energy to flow effortlessly through the crystal.

Apophyllite is found in volcanic cavities, where it crystallizes alongside Stilbite, Heulandite, and Chalcedony. Some of the world’s most prized Apophyllite specimens originate in India, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, and Germany. While it is common in its raw form, facetable material is rare due to its softness, making faceted Apophyllites highly valuable among collectors.
