What is Chalcopyrite?

chalcopyrite crystal

Chalcopyrite is a member of the Sulfide mineral family, with the chemical composition CuFeS2.  It is a primary ore of copper and is commonly found in hydrothermal veins, igneous rocks, and sedimentary deposits. It is often associated with other sulfide minerals such as pyrite, sphalerite crystal, and galena stone. Chalcopyrite crystal forms under a wide range of conditions, typically in low to high-temperature hydrothermal veins, as well as in contact metamorphic environments.

In terms of physical characteristics, chalcopyrite has a brass-yellow color with a metallic luster. It has a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4 and a specific gravity of 4.1-4.3. The mineral is known for its unique crystal habits, which can take on a range of shapes including cubic, octahedral, and tetrahedral. It can also form massive or granular aggregates, as well as inclusions in other minerals.  There is a ton more to learn about chalcopyrite formation and mineral content too!

Peacock Ore

peacock ore

Chalcopyrite is also known as Peacock Ore due to its beautiful, iridescent colors. The colors can range from gold, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The iridescence is caused by the oxidation of the mineral's surface, which creates a thin layer of different sulfide minerals. The mineral is highly sought after by collectors for its unique appearance.

Chalcopyrite is often referred to as "peacock ore" due to its striking and vibrant iridescent colors, which resemble the colorful plumage of a peacock. This mineral exhibits a range of brilliant hues, including blues, purples, pinks, and golds, creating a dazzling visual display. The nickname "peacock ore" captures the mineral's eye-catching beauty and has made it a favorite among collectors and crystal enthusiasts for its distinctive appearance.

Where is Chalcopyrite Found?

Chalcopyrite is an important source of copper ore, and it has been mined for centuries. The mineral was first described in ancient Greece, where it was given the name "chalcos," which means copper.  It can be found in volcanic and sedimentary rocks in countries such as Australia, Spain, Japan, China, Peru and some others.
