What does selenite look like?
Selenite (the crystal form of "Satin spar") is a colorless to milky white crystal with a pearly sheen and beautiful striations. This crystal is not entirely transparent but can be close to being so; the transparency may look foggy or milky. It is a 2 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making it one of the softest minerals, and it can be scratched with your fingernail. This crystal is often sold in its raw tubular form of sticks and towers.
There are some super clear types from locations like Mexico and Greece, but for the most part, it is a stark white color.
There is also a unique selenite stone, that has been nicknamed 'TV Stone' (although the TRUE 'TV Stone' is Ulexite), that allows you to read through the selenite in a fun and unique way.
Selenite is closely associated to the moon as the name of the stone comes from the Greek word which means “moonstone”. The name of this pale crystal is also a fitting tribute for the Greek goddess of the moon called “Selene”.
Selenite Properties
Selenite is among the more potent crystals reputed for their highly vibrational, gentle, yet powerful crystal healing properties. The translucent, milky appearance of selenite with a pearly sheen speaks to its luminous nature. Let's take a deeper look into the properties of selenite.
Cleansing Energy
Often termed the "energy eraser," it is effective at clearing the negativity from spaces, objects, and even your own energy field. Let me give you a couple of examples that show just how powerful this tool can be in terms of resetting energies. It can purify environments and reset the energies to a far more beneficial state.
Mental Clarity
Recognized for its power to stimulate the mind and help it reach new heights of awareness with its clear, pure energy, it assists in gaining insights and making wise decisions while working with your own energy or meditating. It is known to clear up mental fog and help one focus. Its high vibration helps in connecting with the energies of the universe and sensing the guidance offered to us in that space. It enhances intuitive abilities and sharpens them so they are more potent.
Chakra Alignment
The crown and third eye chakras are closely aligned with it. This crystal is a powerful tool for helping you achieve a spiritual awakening. It takes your connection with the universe to the next level and helps you with what is next on your path to ascension.
Self-Cleansing
Many crystals lack an ability possessed by selenite: the ability to cleanse both themselves and other crystals. Thus, it earns its place as an essential tool in any crystal collection.
Healing Energy
It provides energetic positivity and can help that emotionally heavy feeling that sometimes lingers in your heart by fostering tranquility, minimizing stress, and calming anxiety. It induces a state of peacefulness and balance that is perfect for both everyday use and the most trying of times.
What are the different types of selenite?
Selenite comes in many forms and colors, with only the slightest of variations, and each of those with their own set of unique properties and uses. Also, like many all-natural crystals, the different colors that occur in the crystal are due to different minerals that are inside it:
-
White: This is the classic type that people often refer to when they mention selenite. It is a potent cleanser. People often utilize it in the purification of their energetic spaces and of their own personal energy fields. It is an ideal tool for spiritual connection and for maintaining a crystalline mental state.
-
Peach or Orange Selenite: This variety comes packed with iron oxide inclusions, giving it a bright hue. Its selenite qualities prove as effective in this mix, assuring consistency, balance, and emotional stability here. But don't mistake these as chump properties—they are believed to be great for anything related to creativeness, as they assure a clear conduit from your right-brain activity to your left hand.
-
Satin Spar: White selenite is often confused with satin spar. They are similar, but satin spar has a fibrous texture and a silky, glowing appearance that sets it apart. It's often shaped into wands and towers for the work of a specific purpose. If you're going to make a decision based on appearance, you might want to choose Satin Spar for the work of energy.
-
Desert Rose: This variety, which formed in sandy environments, has the appearance of blooming roses. It is a stone that symbolizes growth, resilience, and renewal, and it is particularly favored for manifestation and grounding rituals.
-
TV Stone: This rarer variety has optical properties that allow you to magnify text or images through the crystal. While playful, it also serves as a reminder of its illuminating energy. (Although true 'TV Stone' is ulexite and not selenite.)
Where does selenite come from?
Selenite is found all over the world, but some locations are especially famous:
- United States: Utah, New Mexico, and California.
- Argentina & Greece: Known for unique local deposits.
- Mexico: Home to the Naica Mine, where giant selenite crystals grow up to 36 feet long and 55 tons in weight.
- Madagascar: Mineral-rich regions like Mahajanga produce stunning selenite.
- Morocco: Finally, the Atlas Mountains are a well-known source, especially for peach/orange selenite. This is where a majority of selenite you see on the market comes from.
How to Use Selenite
It can be used in several ways. This magnificent crystal is very useful for cleansing and charging other crystals because it operates with such high frequencies. Another way to try it out is by meditating while holding it. This is especially useful if you struggle with anxious thoughts and need some uplifting encouragement! You can also place it on the crown or third eye chakra as a way to cleanse and restore them. It’s also recommended to put it under a pillow or near your bed if you are struggling to get a good night’s rest. Placing it in your home is another great idea, as it can bring harmony and clear away frustration and fatigue from your everyday life. They’re the ideal gift for the zodiac sign of Taurus as well, as they balance them out perfectly!
We seriously suggest grabbing some of this stone in any form, as it is super versatile and a must in any crystal collection. If you are just starting your crystal collection, then it is a wonderful addition!
Where should you put selenite in your house?
Selenite’s versatility makes it suitable for various areas of your home. Strategic placement can amplify its benefits:
-
Entryways: Place near your front door to create an energetic barrier, keeping negative energy from entering your space. It also ensures the energy in your home remains clean and welcoming.
-
Bedrooms: Selenite can promote restful sleep and calm energy. Keep it on your nightstand, under your pillow, or near your bed to ward off disruptive energies and encourage peace.
-
Living Spaces: Position towers or slabs in common areas to maintain a harmonious atmosphere. Placing it in corners helps disperse energy evenly throughout the room.
-
Meditation and Spiritual Spaces: It enhances focus and spiritual clarity. You can use it in your meditation area or on an altar to support deep reflection and spiritual growth on a daily basis.
-
Workspaces: Keep it near your desk or computer to clear electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) and maintain focus. Its purifying energy can help reduce stress and improve productivity.
How does it compare to other popular crystals?
Selenite is a standout crystal due to its unique properties and uses, but comparing it to other popular stones highlights its special role:
-
vs. Clear Quartz: While both amplify energy, Selenite is a master cleanser, purifying spaces and crystals, whereas Clear Quartz excels at enhancing intentions and manifestation.
-
vs. Amethyst: Selenite promotes mental clarity and peace; Amethyst focuses on emotional healing and spiritual awareness, making them complementary for holistic well-being.
-
vs. Black Tourmaline: Selenite clears and uplifts stagnant energy, while Black Tourmaline protects against negativity and grounds energy. Together, they offer a balanced approach to energetic maintenance.
-
vs. Rose Quartz: Selenite purifies energy and aligns with higher consciousness, while Rose Quartz fosters self-love, emotional healing, and nurturing relationships.
Crystals That Work With Selenite's Healing Properties
Selenite healing properties are pretty well-known among crystal lovers with its luminous and ethereal qualities. However, it can also harmonize well with several crystals, amplifying their energy and enhancing their healing properties. Clear quartz, often called the "master healer," combines beautifully with selenite, intensifying its purifying and cleansing abilities. Amethyst crystal, known for its calming and spiritual qualities, synergizes well to create a serene and tranquil energy. Rose quartz, the stone of love and compassion, also pairs harmoniously well, promoting emotional healing and nurturing energies.
Celestite, with its gentle and angelic vibrations, blends seamlessly, enhancing spiritual connections and inner peace. Additionally, labradorite, with its mystical and transformative qualities, complements it too, offering a heightened sense of intuition and protection. Together, these crystals create a powerful synergy, elevating each other's energy and providing a harmonious support system for spiritual growth, emotional healing, and energetic balance.
How to Cleanse Selenite
Cleansing a selenite crystal is rarely necessary due to its unique self-cleansing properties. It has the remarkable ability to continuously purify itself and its surroundings by absorbing and transmuting negative energies. Unlike many other crystals, it doesn't hold onto these energies, making it inherently pure and low-maintenance. However, if you feel the need to refresh its energy or remove any accumulated energies it may have absorbed, you can use one of these methods:
Place your crystal under the gentle light of the full moon overnight. The moon's energy will cleanse and recharge the crystal's vibrations. Another option is to place it on a larger selenite charging plate. It naturally cleanses and charges other crystals, making it an excellent choice for maintaining the energy of your crystal collection. You can also cleanse it through visualization. Hold the crystal in your hand and imagine a pure, white light washing over it, clearing away any unwanted energies.
Remember that it should not be exposed to water for long periods, as it is a soft and water-soluble mineral. You can give it a quick rinse under running water and dry it afterward without issues, but do not keep it submerged. These cleansing methods are gentle and effective ways to keep your crystal's energy pure and vibrant.
Does It Have Any Toxic Effects?
Selenite is generally safe to handle and use, but some things to keep in mind:
-
Water Solubility: Selenite is a soft mineral (Mohs hardness 2) and is water-soluble. Prolonged exposure to water can dissolve or damage it, so avoid using it in water-based elixirs or cleansing rituals.
-
Handling Care: While safe to touch, Selenite is prone to scratches and chips due to its delicate nature. Store it separately from harder stones to maintain its integrity.
-
Not for Consumption: Like most crystals, Selenite should not be ingested. If creating a crystal elixir, use indirect methods (e.g., placing the crystal near, but not in, the water).
-
Dusting and Cleaning: Use a soft cloth or compressed air to clean Selenite without risking damage. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or abrasive materials.
Dyed Selenite
Dyed and colored Selenite are intriguing variations of this crystal that have been artificially altered to exhibit vibrant and non-natural hues. Dyed Selenite typically undergoes a process where it is immersed in a colored solution, allowing the crystal to absorb the dye. On the other hand, colored Selenite may involve the application of paint or pigments to the surface of the crystal. These treatments can result in an array of colors, from bright blues and greens to vivid pinks and purples. Although painted will likely come off, while the dyed versions retain their colors.
While dyed and colored Selenite can be visually appealing, there is a debate within the crystal community about how these treatments may affect the crystal's healing properties. Some enthusiasts believe that the introduction of artificial colors alters the crystal's energy, potentially diminishing its natural energetic qualities. Others argue that the intention behind the crystal and the user's connection with it remain paramount, regardless of its color.
Ultimately, whether one chooses natural or dyed/colored Selenite depends on personal preference and intention. It is entirely up to you!
